First steps

While visiting the marvellous town of Glauchau, Saxony, Mr. Fletcher Burton, Consul General of the United States took part in a discussion with local business people and students. There Mr. Burton was asked by students of the local high school “Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium” if he could be of assistance in finding a sister city in the United States. In an instant, we got the promised support!
To this day, a number of American Cities are actively searching for partners in Germany, some of them for years. Lynchburg, Virginia had been trying since 2001 but has been turned down by several local administrations because of financial concerns.

Without losing much time, we contacted Manfred Mibus from Lynchburg, VA. He is of German decent and has been living in the States for numerous years. This was quite helpful since the first contact could therefore be done in German as well.

The “Chemistry” was great from the beginning; Glauchau seemed to be the perfect partner!
We want to thank all the people who took interest and initiative in this project for their time and effort. Long hours of discussion were needed to find the right way. Students of the Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium held lectures talking about history and politics of the U.S., as well as their personal experiences with exchanges to the States.
With great interest did we actively take part in events hosted/ co-hosted by the Consulate General of the United States in Leipzig.

Der damalige Generalkonsul der USA Mr. Burton, weilte in Glauchau und wurde durch Schüler des Georgius- Agricola- Gymnasiums zu möglichen Städtepartnerschaften befragt. Mr. Burton half sofort! Eine nicht unbeträchtliche Anzahl amerikanischer Städte sucht Partner in Deutschland, mitunter schon seit mehreren Jahren. Lynchburg in Virginia bemühte sich seit 2001 um deutsche Partner und scheiterte an administrativen Hemmnissen auf deutscher Seite. Wir nahmen mit Manfred Mibus in Lynchburg Kontakt auf. Er lebt seit vielen Jahren in den USA und ist deutscher Abstammung, Erstkontakte konnten also auch in deutscher Sprache erfolgen. Die “Chemie” stimmte von Beginn an, wir trafen auf großes Interesse.

Dank an alle Wegbereiter für ihr persönliches Engagement. Viele Stunden diskutierten wir über Möglichkeiten und Wege. Schüler des Georgius- Agricola- Gymnasiums hielten Vorträge zu Politik und Geschichte der USA, sprachen über ihre persönlichen Erlebnisse bei Austauschaktionen in die USA.
Aktiv wurden wir einbezogen in Veranstaltungen, die vom Generalkonsulat der USA in Leipzig organisiert wurden.
