Konzerte im Advent

Liebe Freunde der (Glauchauer) Kirchenmusik,

ich möchte wieder alle herzlich zu den verschiedenen Konzerten einladen, die in den nächsten Wochen in der St.Georgenkirche stattfinden. Da ist sicher für jeden Geschmack was dabei. Besonders hinweisen möchte ich auf den 3.12., wenn das “DUO ZIA” jazzige Kompositionen für Trompete und Silbermannorgel darbietet. Auch ein Besuch des Weihnachtskonzertes am 17.12. ist sehr zu empfehlen, da erklingen u.a. unbekannte, sehr schöne Kantaten von G.Ph.Telemann und Ausschnitte aus dem französischen “Weihnachtsoratorium” von C.Saint-Saens.

Oratorium Elias

Liebe Freunde der Kirchenmusik,

in 2 Wochen ist es so weit: am 29.10. erklingt das Mendelssohn-Oratorium “ELIAS” in unserer Glauchauer Georgenkirche. Ca. 160 Mitwirkende bereiten sich seit geraumer Zeit darauf vor und wir hoffen natürlich sehr, dass es viele interessierte Zuhörer für diese beeindruckende, romantische Musik gibt!
Das monumentale Werk beginnt 19.30 Uhr und dauert etwa 135 Minuten. Zeitiges Kommen sichert gute Plätze, die Kirche wird 18.45 Uhr geöffnet.
Die Karten sind im Vorverkauf wieder etwas billiger (10 und 7 €), an der Abendkasse kosten sie 12 und 9 €.
Für Kinder, Schüler und Studenten ist der Eintritt frei !!!

Bitte ladet auch andere Musikfreunde zu diesem besonderen Konzert ein. Im Anhang findet Ihr das Plakat zum Selber-Ausdrucken und Weitergeben !

Diesmal gibt es 3 Tage vorher, nämlich am 26.10., einen Einführungsvortrag im LUTHERHAUS (Dorotheenstr./Ecke Wilhelmstrasse): 19 Uhr wird Dr.Thilo Daniel aus Dresden das Werk in Wort und Ton vorstellen und erklären.

Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn wir uns am 29.10. in Glauchau sehen !

Resonanz in Lynchburg

Nachdem im vergangenen Jahr unsere Polizisten in Lynchburg begeistert aufgenommen wurden, stehen nunmehr Lars Röthig und seine Familie im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit in unserer Partnerstadt.
Der private Besuch bei der Familie Hackman wurde von der Presse in Lynchburg positiv registriert. Gern gibt er seine Erfahrungen an die Lynchburger Bäcker weiter.

Darrel Laurant von “News & Advance” schreibt dazu folgendes:

What’s the difference between the United States and Germany for a prospective baker?

Time, for one thing. Lars Röthig learned his trade during a three-year apprenticeship in his native German town of Glauchau. Petra Hackman, co-owner of the Lorraine Bakery in the Lynchburg Community Market, served her apprenticeship in a week.

“The King Arthur Flower Company up in Vermont puts on a weeklong seminar for people who want to become bakers,” Hackman said, “so I went up there. That’s how I learned.”

This week, Röthig and Hackman are learning from each other. The German baker, who still works with his father, was brought over as part of a Sister Cities exchange. His wife, Mandy, and son, Maurice, accompanied him.

“My cousin came (to Lynchburg) with a group of policemen from Glauchau last year,” Röthig said through an interpreter, “and when he came back, he said, ‘This lady over there wants a baker.’”

That was Petra Hackman, who has geared her bakery to appeal to Lynchburg’s European community.

“It took about a year to get him (Röthig) here,” she said. “The first thing he noticed was that a lot of what we did was more French than German. We have a lot of French customers because of Areva, so we try to do both.”

This Friday, as usual, Hackman and her husband Steve will be working virtually all night in preparation for their busiest sales day on Saturday. This week, however, will come with a twist — a variety of German breads and pastries produced by their guest.

On Wednesday, Röthig was serving visitors slices of Eierschecke — a sort of thick crusted bread/pastry filled with custard — and Auflauf, more like a coffee cake with cognac included for taste. Meanwhile, he had a batch of rye yeast waiting in a rear cooler, already bubbling.

“It’s alive,” he said.

“In Germany, you go to the local bakery every day,” explained Hermann Ulrich, a German native who came to Lynchburg to work for American-Hofmann three decades ago. “Every town has a different type of bread. It’s all different.”

That’s the kind of identity the Hackmans would like to create in Lynchburg. Petra is also a native of Germany, and remembers enough about the breads and pastries of her youth to translate some of them into American baked goods.

Baking is a family tradition for Röthig. Not only did he serve his apprenticeship with his father and grandfather, but he and his family live in the same house with the two older generations.

“It’s a big house,” he explained.

As for working with his father, he said: “It’s OK. He’s good to work for.”

And in four or five years, when his father retires, he will take over the family business.

“Over there, they do things a lot more economically,” Hackman said. “Where I was putting some things in small individual dishes, he would be more likely to bake a big pan and cut individual pieces from it.”

Röthig said he works eight hours a day, six days a week in Germany.

“I work more,” Hackman said.

They both laughed. Bakers understand each other.

fruchtbares Jahr 2011 !

Vielleicht sehen wir uns ja bei einem der vielen Konzerte in Glauchau ? Wir
möchten Sie/Euch wieder ganz herzlich zu den verschiedenen Veranstaltungen
einladen, die auch 2011 stattfinden (Kirchenmusik_2011). Im Mittelpunkt steht
natürlich sehr oft unsere wunderschöne Silbermannorgel – so auch am
kommenden Sonntag, 9.Januar um 19.30 Uhr , wenn Bachpreisträger Stefan
Kircheis und Andreas Wenske (Oboe) aus Berlin hier gastieren.

Mibus-family in Glauchau

Angela und Manfred Mibus sind wieder einmal auf Entdeckungstour in Sachsen.

Unsere Gäste aus der Partnerstadt Lynchburg, Virginia besuchten am Montag die Landeshauptstadt Dresden. Neben der Frauenkirche interessierten sie sich besonders für die “Türckische Cammer”.
Am Dienstag werden sie einen Rundflug über Sachsen unternehmen und am Abend mit lieben Freunden zusammentreffen.
Angela und Manfred Mibus schufen auf amerikanischer Seite die Voraussetzungen für die Städtepartnerschaft zwischen Lynchburg, VA und Glauchau. Wir sagen “Danke” für die vielen Jahre ihres Engagements.

Glauchau im Blickpunkt

Seit gestern informiert eine Vitrine im Foyer der Stadtverwaltung Lynchburg über die Partnerstadt Glauchau. LuAnn Hunt schickte mir sofort einige Bilder.

Auch Bert Dodson hat die Mitbringsel seines Besuchs in Glauchau zur Verfügung gestellt. Mittlerweile arbeitet der ehemalige Vize-Bürgermeister aktiv in unserer Partnerorganisation mit.
Außerdem wurde auf der website der Stadt Lynchburg ein Luftbild von Glauchau unter der Rubrik: Foto der Woche publiziert und auf die Ausstellung im Foyer der Stadtverwaltung hingewiesen.

Mit diesen Mitteln wird einer breiten Öffentlichkeit die Wertschätzung unserer Zusammenarbeit zugänglich.
Sicherlich wird auch unsere Stadtverwaltung in geeigneter Form reagieren.

Glauchau Featured in City Hall Display

LYNCHBURG’S GERMAN SISTER CITY, GLAUCHAU FEATURED IN CITY HALL DISPLAY

Information on Lynchburg’s German Sister City, Glauchau, Germany, will be featured in the display case in the main lobby of City Hall, 900 Church Street, from Wednesday, July 7, 2010 until Sunday, August 1, 2010. Lynchburg and Glauchau became sister cities in 2007. The display will include flags of Germany, Saxony, and Glauchau, and photographs of castles and other notable sites. Also featured will be commemorative medals, textiles, toys and other items made in Glauchau.

Tina Johnson of the Sister City Board stated, “Citizens of Lynchburg and members of Sister City enjoyed the recent visit of Captain M. Urbansky and Lieutenant R. Haller of the Glauchau Police Department. Informative international exchange is just one of the many opportunities available through the activities of Sister City.”

Anyone interested in becoming involved in the Sister City program is encouraged to visit “Sister City of Lynchburg Plus” and “Friends of Lynchburg”

Glauchau, Germany

Glauchau is a town in the State of Saxony, formerly part of East Germany. Today, its 25,000+ citizens play an important role in the German economy producing woolen goods, dye-works, paper, linen, thread, and machinery.

A pair of castles forms the historic heart of the community. The 12^th century Forderglauchau Castle contains the town’s library, art gallery, concert hall and music school. The neighboring 15^th century Hinterglauchau Castle is home to the Glauchau Museum and art collection. Another landmark is St. George’s Lutheran Church which houses a rare Silbermann pipe organ installed in 1730.

History of Sister City – Plus of Lynchburg

Sister City of Lynchburg – Plus is a volunteer, non-profit organization and an affiliate of Sister Cities International. In 1992, a small group met to consider organizing a sister city. Because of

Lynchburg’s strong business connections to France, it was decided that the first sister city should be in France. In 1995, Sister Cities International notified Lynchburg – Plus that Rueil-Malmaison in France was looking for a sister city in the United States. A delegation toured Lynchburg, and they were greatly impressed with the area and the hospitality. In 1996, a group from Lynchburg traveled to Rueil, and by the end of their visit, they had a commitment for a sister city match.

After the success with Rueil-Malmaison, Sister City of Lynchburg – Plus began exploring a match with a city in Germany. Manfred Mibus led the search, and after three years, learned that Glauchau was searching for a sister city. A delegation from Lynchburg visited Glauchau in 2004, and the two formally became sister cities on April 30, 2007. The Sister City program provides opportunities for groups and individuals throughout Central Virginia to learn more about the world and its people and to foster friendship and understanding.

Travels Across the Atlantic

Since 2004, there have been several visits between the two cities. In 2004, Manfred Mibus and Bill and Martha Goodman visited Glauchau as the guests of the Glauchau City Council, the Lions Club, and the Friends of the United States Association. In 2005, Count Georg von Schonburg-Glauchau accompanied by his wife, the Countess Madeleine von Schonburg-Glauchau, visited Lynchburg. A proclamation was signed during their trip announcing the intention of Lynchburg and Glauchau to become sister cities.

In 2006 and 2009, groups of Lynchburg students and parents traveled to Glauchau and stayed with several local families. In 2006, Lynchburg hosted 12 Glauchau students and teachers. Following Vice Mayor Bert Dodson’s fall 2009 visit to Germany, Captain M. Urbansky and Lieutenant R. Haller of the Glauchau Police Department traveled to Lynchburg for a 10-day visit, and another German student group will visit Lynchburg this fall. The City of Lynchburg is proud of the ongoing relationships with Glauchau and Rueil-Malmaison.

Mac-user kennen diese Probleme nicht!

Unsere Polizisten haben sich hervorragend geschlagen, das Interview war nicht einstudiert oder vorbereitet.
Simultan musste auf völlig unbekannte Fragen reagiert werden.
PS: LuAnn und ich haben regen Kontakt. Auch sie ist Fotograf. Nach Abstimmung mit LuAnn werden ab sofort regelmäßig in LuAnn’s column Artikel und Fotos von ihr veröffentlicht.

Organ music and more…

From june, 19th to june, 27th there will be a lot of concerts in the churches of Glauchau.
Here you get some impressions from the St. George Church in Glauchau- a Lutheran Church.
It is a pleasure for me to support these activities with my photographies.
At this time a company prints the pictures and you will be able to purchase them as picture postcards.
By the way- it is one of the world famous organs by Silbermann.
